Miracle Play

a novel

by Susan Shreve

"The complicated time problem occasioned by a story covering more than a century of overlapping life histories is brilliantly handled. The narrative method, involving discrete incidents of sharply focused and objective story, combining into longer chapter sequences, suggests comparisons with and influences from the best accomplishments in American still photography. In fact Susan Richard Shreve's novel is something of a slide show on Eastern upper-class American social history, professionally arranged and projected."—The New York Times Book Review

"Reading this book is like turning the pages of a family album. The faces are strangers at first, but as we close Miracle Play on the last candid family portrait, we have grown to care about the Howells clan. The shadows of their family touch upon our own."—Chicago Sun-Times

SYNOPSIS

In Miracle Play, Susan Richards Shreve has created one of the most memorable families in recent literature. What makes the Howells unusual is that they are loved and loving’ what makes them unforgettable is the ways in which they damage each other through an excess of love. If they have proved too independent to maintain the Quaker faith of their ancestors, they have nevertheless remained conscientious objectors, not simply to war but to everything that threatens the spirit and imagination.

EXCERPT

The first entry in the Howells family Bible was made by Caleb Howells in 1820 and said in an awkward hand:

THE BIBLE IS FOR KEEPING THE TRUE ADN IMPORTANT STORIES OF THEHOWELLS FAMILY IN THIS NEW LAND, THAT IN THE YEARS AHEAD OURWILL HAVE A HISTORY.

In between Genesis and Exodus and Leviticus were sheafs of unlined paper for the Howells family to record their own testaments. For generations, the Howells children left home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, armed with stories sufficient for combat in the world and sustained by the wonderful belief that they could always come home.
